Explain why the REPAIR Act matters to heavy-duty parts & repair
Posted by Michele Howard on 4th Feb 2026
At A&I Parts Center, we know that in the world of heavy-duty trucking and agriculture, time isn’t just money—it’s everything. Whether you are hauling freight through Amarillo, managing a fleet in Guymon, or harvesting crops near Dalhart, you depend on your equipment to stay moving.
However, a growing challenge is threatening your ability to get back on the road: restricted repair data. That is why we are advocating for H.R. 1566, the REPAIR Act.
The Data Dead-End: Restricted Repair Information
Modern heavy-duty trucks are "computers on wheels". Every time a sensor trips or an engine light flashes, the vehicle generates diagnostic data. Currently, manufacturers often restrict access to this essential data, keeping it locked behind proprietary software that only "authorized" dealerships can access.
When independent technicians and local auto parts stores are locked out of this information, it creates a monopoly on repair knowledge that hurts the entire industry.
From Data to Downtime
The REPAIR Act matters because it addresses a dangerous "domino effect" that starts with restricted data and ends with your business losing money:
-
Delays in Fixing Trucks: When an independent technician cannot access the necessary diagnostic codes, a simple fix can turn into a week-long ordeal. If the local shop can't read the data, the truck must often be towed—sometimes hundreds of miles—to the nearest dealership.
-
Higher Repair Costs: A lack of competition always drives prices up. When dealerships are the only ones with the "key" to the data, they can set the price for parts and labor without fear of a local competitor offering a better deal.
-
Costly Downtime for Fleets and Farmers: Every day a truck sits idle is a day it isn’t generating revenue. For farmers during harvest or fleets with tight delivery windows, these delays can lead to ruined crops, missed deadlines, and thousands of dollars in lost productivity.
Why A&I Parts Center is Taking Action
Heavy-duty and commercial vehicles are essential to our economy. From our locations in Dumas and Stratford to our teams in Texline and beyond, A&I Parts Center believes that you should have the right to choose who repairs your vehicle.
The REPAIR Act would ensure that:
-
Independent shops have the same access to tools and data as dealerships.
-
Vehicle owners can enjoy lower costs through healthy market competition.
-
Local economies stay strong by keeping repair work—and jobs—in our communities.
